Understanding BPD
Understanding BPD
Borderline personality disorder affects how a person feels about themselves and others. Emotions can rise fast and hit hard, and relationships can swing between closeness and conflict. It often grows from a mix of temperament and painful early experiences.
BPD is different from bipolar disorder, and a careful assessment helps tell them apart.
Recognizing BPD
Common signs
These patterns are painful, and they are treatable.
- Intense fear of abandonment
- Rapid mood shifts that last hours rather than weeks
- Unstable sense of self
- Impulsive choices with spending, substances or relationships
- Chronic emptiness or anger that feels hard to control
Our Approach
How we treat BPD
Skills, therapy and psychiatric care, coordinated by one team.
- DBT skills groups for emotion regulation, distress tolerance and relationships
- Individual therapy, including trauma therapy when appropriate
- Psychiatric care for co-occurring depression, anxiety or substance use
- Family support so loved ones learn the same skills
Safety First
Safety comes first
Outpatient care works best when everyone is safe.
If someone is in immediate danger, call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room. We coordinate higher levels of care when outpatient is not enough.
