More Than Weekly Therapy

What is a mental health IOP?

A mental health intensive outpatient program provides nine or more structured clinical hours per week of group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric support, without any substance use requirement. It is the level of care for people whose depression, anxiety, trauma, or mood symptoms keep breaking through weekly therapy, but who do not need hospitalization or full-day treatment.

Mental health is the foundation of everything we do at Heights. This track exists because many people searching for real help do not have a substance use problem, and generic programs built around addiction do not fit them. Here, the groups, the skills work, and the individual therapy are all designed for mental health conditions first, delivered by master’s-level clinicians in groups small enough that you are known by name.

Mental Health IOP is also a proven step-down after a psychiatric hospitalization or a partial hospitalization program, and a step up when weekly counseling is not holding. Day and evening schedules are available, along with virtual and hybrid options, and if substance use is part of the picture we treat it in the same plan as integrated dual diagnosis care.

Our Approach

Mental health first, because recovery starts there

Many IOPs in Houston are addiction programs that accept mental health clients. Ours is built the other way around. Groups are kept thoughtfully small, programming is designed for mood, anxiety, and trauma work, and every clinician is master’s-level with advanced training. Your privacy is protected throughout, and we are honest about cost and out-of-network benefits from the first conversation.

When the program ends, support does not have to: most clients step down to weekly therapy with the same team, and mentoring through our sister practice can keep structure and accountability in daily life for as long as it helps.

Common Questions

Mental Health IOP, answered

If you do not see your question here, call our admissions team at (877) 549-5102 and we will walk you through it.

What is a mental health IOP?

A mental health intensive outpatient program provides nine or more structured clinical hours per week of group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric support for conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma, and mood disorders, while you live at home. No substance use diagnosis is required.

Who is Mental Health IOP for?

Adults whose depression, anxiety, panic, OCD, trauma, or mood symptoms are not improving with weekly therapy, people stepping down after psychiatric hospitalization or PHP, and anyone in a life crisis who needs real structure without full-day treatment.

Do I need a substance use problem to attend?

No. This track is built specifically for mental health. If substance use is part of the picture, we treat both together in one integrated dual diagnosis plan.

How many hours a week is the program?

Nine or more clinical hours per week, typically spread across three or more days, on day or evening schedules. Your exact cadence is confirmed at assessment.

Can I keep working or going to school?

Yes. Day, evening, and hybrid schedules exist so treatment fits around work, classes, and family. Many groups and sessions are also available virtually.

What therapies are included?

Clinician-led process groups, CBT and DBT skills, weekly individual therapy, and psychiatric and medication support, with EMDR, CPT, somatic experiencing, and neurofeedback sequenced in as your plan requires.

Is medication management included?

Psychiatric coordination and medication management are woven into the same plan when indicated, so your prescriber and your therapists are never working from different pages.

How long does Mental Health IOP last?

There is no fixed length. Many clients spend several weeks to a few months at this level, stepping down to weekly therapy as they stabilize, with the plan reassessed throughout.

Is this the same as a psychiatric hospital or PHP?

No. IOP is outpatient: you live at home and attend structured programming several days per week. If you need more support, our PHP provides twenty or more hours most days, and we coordinate hospital referrals when around-the-clock care is indicated.

Does insurance cover mental health IOP?

We are a private-pay practice. For clients with out-of-network benefits, we provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement, and we help verify your benefits and explain costs before you commit to anything.

What is IOP in mental health?

In mental health care, IOP stands for intensive outpatient program. It provides structured group and individual therapy several days a week, for nine or more clinical hours, while you live at home. It is often used for depression, anxiety, trauma, and mood disorders when weekly therapy is not enough.

When can I call and speak with someone?

Our admissions team answers seven days a week, from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm Central Time. Call (877) 549-5102 to talk with a real person about what is going on, your schedule, and whether our programs are the right fit. If you reach out after hours, leave a message or send the consultation form and we will return your call as soon as we open. If this is an emergency, call 911. If you or someone you love is in a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
