The Young Adult Program

A pivotal stage deserves specialized care

The years from late teens into the twenties are when most mental health and addiction patterns first take hold, and when treatment matters most. Young adults are not older teenagers or younger adults, and generic programs miss them: the group is twice their age, the goals assume a settled life, and the family is either excluded or put in charge. Our program meets young adults where they are, building real coping skills, treating co-occurring conditions together, and involving family in a way that supports growing independence.

What We Help With

The reasons young adults come to us

Some arrive in crisis, most arrive stuck. These are the patterns we see every week, and the stalled launch that so often sits underneath them.

What We Treat

Common reasons young adults come to us

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and depression, often appearing for the first time
  • Alcohol and substance use moving past experimentation
  • Gaming, technology, and social media overuse crowding out real life
  • Trauma and emotional dysregulation
  • School stalled, dropped, or on the edge
  • Co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions

The Stalled Launch

What failure to launch actually is

“Failure to launch” is not laziness, and it is not a character verdict. It is a stalled transition to adulthood, school unfinished, career not started, living at home with the days organized around screens, and there is almost always something treatable underneath it: anxiety that makes every step feel dangerous, depression that drains the point of trying, gaming that provides the achievement real life has not, or executive-function struggles that were never addressed. Treat the driver, rebuild the structure, and the launch resumes.

How We Work

Therapy for young adults that builds real independence

Three things shape how we help young adults move forward, and none of them involve treating a capable adult like a problem to manage.

Meet Them There

Developmentally-Tuned Care

Therapy that speaks to where young adults actually are: identity, emotional regulation, relationships, and the life skills that support independence, delivered by clinicians who respect them, with peers in the room instead of a group twice their age.

Family Matters

Family Involved, Not in Charge

We bring family in thoughtfully, rebuilding communication and healthy boundaries while respecting growing autonomy, and our evening open family meetings give parents their own place to learn and find support.

Treat It Together

Mental Health & Addiction, Together

Anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and gaming or technology overuse are treated in one coordinated, dual diagnosis-forward plan, with medication management integrated when appropriate.

Levels of Care · ASAM-Guided

The right level of support

After a comprehensive assessment, a licensed clinician recommends the right level across our full continuum, and adjusts it as the young adult grows and stabilizes, with school and work protected wherever possible.

Our Approach

Why families trust Heights with their young adults

We treat young adults with respect and real clinical depth, not as a problem to manage. Co-occurring conditions are treated together, family is involved in a way that builds trust rather than control, and treatment connects directly to school, work, and independence goals, with mentoring carrying the plan into daily life. We are clear about cost and out-of-network benefits up front, and every plan is customized around the young adult, built for lasting change.

For Referring Professionals

Referring a client to Heights?

Educational consultants, therapists, and families often refer young adults who need more support than weekly therapy while staying connected to school or work. Our admissions team responds promptly, coordinates directly with you within your client’s consent, and keeps you informed through step-down and discharge planning.

Burnout or Depression? How to Tell the Difference

Common Questions

Young adult care, answered

If you do not see your question here, call our admissions team at (877) 549-5102 and we will walk you through it.

What ages do you consider young adults?

Our program focuses on adults roughly 18 to 29, from the late-teen transition through the twenties. We will confirm fit during your assessment.

What is failure to launch?

Failure to launch is a stalled transition to adulthood: school unfinished, career not started, living at home with days organized around screens. It is not laziness; there is almost always treatable anxiety, depression, gaming overuse, or executive-function struggle underneath, and treating the driver is what restarts the launch.

How are families involved?

Family involvement is a core part of young adult care. We include family in ways that rebuild communication and healthy boundaries while respecting the young adult’s autonomy, and parents get their own support through our evening open family meetings.

Do you treat gaming or technology addiction in young adults?

Yes. Gaming and technology overuse are among the most common reasons young adults come to us, and we treat them alongside any co-occurring anxiety, depression, or substance use, with balance-based goals rather than impossible abstinence.

Do you treat college students?

Yes. Many of our young adult clients are in school or trying to return to it. Evening IOP, three-day schedules, and virtual sessions are built so treatment and coursework can coexist, and we help plan returns from medical leave.

Can my young adult keep going to school or work during treatment?

Usually, yes. With flexible outpatient and evening IOP options, many young adults stay in school or work while in treatment. We build the schedule around their real life.

What if my young adult does not think they need help?

That is common at this age. Call us and we will talk through how to approach it, including our professionally guided intervention services when needed, and how families can find support through our open family meetings while your young adult comes around.

Can parents and family attend support sessions?

Yes, and we encourage it. Beyond family therapy, we host evening open family meetings, a welcoming space where parents and loved ones can learn, connect with other families, and find support.

How much does young adult treatment cost?

It depends on the services and intensity in the customized plan. We are private pay and work with out-of-network benefits, provide detailed superbills, and will explain costs and verify benefits before you commit to anything.

How do I start?

Call (877) 549-5102 or send a confidential message. Admissions listens, answers your questions, and schedules a confidential ASAM-guided assessment, often within days. Either the young adult or a parent can make the first call.

Do you work with educational and therapeutic consultants?

Yes. Educational and therapeutic consultants, therapists, and families often refer young adults to Heights. With consent, we coordinate with the professionals involved so the plan stays consistent across school, home, and treatment.

When can I call and speak with someone?

Our admissions team answers seven days a week, from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm Central Time. Call (877) 549-5102 to talk with a real person about what is going on, your schedule, and whether our programs are the right fit. If you reach out after hours, leave a message or send the consultation form and we will return your call as soon as we open. If this is an emergency, call 911. If you or someone you love is in a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
