Understanding Stimulant Misuse

Why it is easy to miss

Prescription stimulants are common in high pressure jobs and on campus, and misuse often looks like productivity until it does not.

Read about Adderall misuse among professionals. We also treat cocaine and other stimulants.

Recognizing the Pattern

Signs of Adderall misuse

Misuse can happen with or without a prescription.

  • Taking more than prescribed
  • Buying pills
  • Crashing after use
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Weight loss
  • Needing it to function

Our Approach

How we treat Adderall misuse

Treatment rebuilds what the pills were covering for.

  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Therapy for burnout and perfectionism
  • Sleep repair
  • Relapse prevention

We treat ADHD alongside substance use but do not provide ADHD testing or prescribe ADHD medication. If you are not sure whether it is burnout or depression, your assessment will help sort it out.

Common Questions

Adderall treatment, answered

For guidance about your situation, call admissions at (877) 549-5102.

Can I be addicted if it is prescribed?

Yes, when use goes beyond the prescription or becomes hard to control.

Will you take over my ADHD medication?

No. We coordinate with your prescriber.

Do you take insurance?

We are private pay and provide superbills you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. You can check your benefits with our out-of-network benefits check.

What are the signs of Adderall misuse?

Taking more than prescribed or taking it earlier in the day, using someone else’s prescription, running out before refills, crashing between doses, trouble sleeping, weight loss, irritability and panic. Needing it to feel normal rather than focused is the clearest signal.

What does Adderall withdrawal feel like?

Most people describe heavy fatigue, low mood, increased appetite and trouble concentrating for one to two weeks, sometimes longer. It is rarely medically dangerous, but depression during the crash is common and is treated directly rather than waited out.

Do you treat ADHD and stimulant misuse at the same time?

Yes. Our psychiatric providers evaluate whether ADHD is present, what has genuinely been helping and what has not, and build a plan that treats both rather than one at the expense of the other.

Can I keep working or studying during treatment?

For most people, yes. Evening IOP runs Tuesday through Thursday, 5:15 to 8:15 pm, in person or virtual, and the three day IOP schedule is built around a full time job. Your clinician is honest with you if the schedule you want is not enough treatment.
